Volunteer Recruitment:
Tots Read Programme
Background:
Tots Read is a pilot programme set up by The SBL Vision Family Service Centre, in collaboration with Calvary Community Care. This programme aims at bringing English reading habits early to children from low-income families so that they can enjoy a wider variety of reading materials and build a stronger foundation of the language.
Each story reader will engage children aged 3-4 years old in a small group setting (2-3 children) by reading pictorial books and get these children to be interested in books and to pick up some simple English words.
Roles and Responsibilities:
• To read to young children (age 3-4 years old) using age-appropriate pictorial books in order to increase their exposure to English
• To support the young children’s ability to pick up simple English words and help them develop an interest in reading with the guidance of an adult reader
• To make reading an enjoyable process for the young children
Pre-requisites:
• 18 years old and above
• Able to speak English proficiently with accurate pronunciation.
• Able to conduct oneself in a professional manner and communicate without judgement.
• Able to travel to the volunteering location in Tampines.
Time Commitment:
• Available to volunteer on Tuesdays, 7.30PM – 8.15PM (tentative)
• Able to commit for at least 6 months.
Upon clearing the selection interview, the selected volunteers are required to attend a training before the launch date. This will help the volunteers to understand more on the objectives of this programme and on how to conduct the reading sessions to the target audience.
